What Second Step Resources is

Second Step Resources is a free, independent directory that links to established nonprofits, government programs, and employer coalitions serving people navigating reentry after incarceration. Second Step Resources is not a government agency, a law firm, or a licensed service provider. It does not provide legal, medical, or financial advice.

What data we collect

Very little, on purpose:

Release-Day Checklist: your checked/unchecked items are stored only in your own browser's local storage. This data never leaves your device and is never sent to us or anyone else. Clearing your browser data or using a different device or browser will reset it.
Legal Aid Prep Summary: the state, offense type, and notes you enter are used only to generate your on-screen and printable summary. This information is not saved, stored, or transmitted anywhere — it exists only in your browser tab while you're using it.
Employer job submissions: if you submit a job posting, the information you enter (company name, contact info, job details) is sent via your own email client, or through a linked submission form, to the person who reviews postings for this site. We do not otherwise store or publish this information without review.

We do not use cookies, analytics trackers, or advertising pixels on this site as of the date above. If that changes, this policy will be updated to say so clearly.

No account, no login

Second Step Resources does not require you to create an account, log in, or provide your name to use the resource directory, checklist, or legal aid prep tool.

Links to other websites

Second Step Resources links to third-party organizations (legal aid providers, employers, treatment locators, faith-based groups, and others). We do our best to link only to established, legitimate organizations, but we do not control these external sites, and their own privacy policies and practices apply once you leave Second Step Resources. Programs and contact information can change — always confirm current details directly with the organization.

No warranty

Second Step Resources is provided "as is." We make reasonable efforts to keep listed resources accurate and current, but we cannot guarantee that any organization listed here will be available, eligible, or appropriate for your specific situation. Nothing on this site is a substitute for advice from a licensed attorney, medical provider, or financial professional.

Employer job postings

Job postings submitted through Second Step Resources are reviewed before being published. We reserve the right to decline or remove any posting, including ones that appear predatory, misleading, or inconsistent with fair-chance hiring practices. Second Step Resources is not a party to any employment agreement between an employer and an applicant.
